Athens - Omonia square

Omonia is the oldest square of modern Athens. The square is the starting point for roads leading to different parts of the city, all with their own different character. It therefore is not surprising that Omonia is one of the standard points of reference and orientation in Athens. Omonia Square and its immediate surroundings are one of the busiest parts of Athens - busy in terms of traffic, commerce and tourism, with numerous offices, shops and hotels. In the center of the square, there are gardens and a fountain; it is surrounded by tall modern blocks, which create a cosmopolitan atmosphere in sharp contrast to the male society of the typical old Greek coffeehouses and the classical-style buildings of the 19th Century. Omonia today has taken on a more modern aspect. Department stores, renovated hotels and sophisticated neoclassical building facades have breathed new life into it. The activity on Omonia Square never ceases.
