Sitia

A very beautiful small town on the eastern edge of Crete that can be described as a typical, peaceful Mediterranean port town being the smallest in the prefecture of Lassithi. It has not yet experienced the effects of mass tourism so it has largely kept its genuine Mediterranean flair. Built in the style of an amphitheatre on the eastern side of a hill sheltered from the west by the bay this charming little town has many cafes and taverns lining its promenade which frames the modest fishing harbour. East of the harbour there is a sandy beach within walking distance from the town. Here one can have relaxing days by the sea, or visit many important archaeological sites in the surrounding area or enjoy the bay of Sitia from the Venetian Castle of Kazarma, that was built on 13th century. Its name was taken from the Venetians that they named Casa di Arma and was used as an army camp.. Also in the area is the beautifully situated medieval Monastery of Toplou with it’s most interesting museum collection of Manuscripts and Byzantine Icons. One should also visit the exotic beach of Vai to enjoy it’s sparkling sands and crystal clear waters and to admire it’s unique palm forest the only one in Europe .
