Atsipopoulo

It is situated 5 kilometers west of Rethymno at an altitude of 160 m. Its permanent residents are 2.500 (as recorded in 2001). It is built almost in the center of Northern Crete and is only 85 Kilometers from the Heraklion airport and 70 Kilometers away from the one in Hania.

The village of Atsipopoulo is strategically placed and therefore it has seen many battles against the Turks. The houses are closely built to each other and are easily converted to a fortress in times of need. The residents realized the architectural value of their homes and respected and up kept them. In this way Atsipopoulo today upholds the traditional look and sophistication of Venetian years. Its neighborhoods, its churches and spellbinding alleys will charm the visitor.
