Lesvos

Lesvos is a Greek island located in the north eastern Aegean Sea. Is the third largest island of Greece and the largest of the the numerous islands scattered in the Aegean. The capital of Lesvos is Mytiline and is situated in the south-eastern part of the island.

The island is characterized by mountains, forests containing one of the few known petrified forests which has been declared a Protected Natural Monument,  long beaches and its volcanic origin is manifested in several hot springs and 2 main volcanic harbours.

Lesvos is the birthplace of many famous persons among them is  the world wide known poetess Sappho. The meaning of the word lesbian derives from the poems of Sappho, which contained emotional content directed toward other women, and this is the reason that Lesvos and especially Eressos are visited frequently by lesbian tourists.
