Georgioupolis

Georgioupolis lies at the northern coast of Crete, approx. 35 klm away from Chania and 20 klm from Rethymno. It is a coastal village situated at the bay of Almiros. The village has adequate facilities for visitors but keeps its own traditional character complimented by old eucalyptus trees, the three small rivers that flow into the sea, impressive and beautiful scenery which is backed by the panorama of the White Mountains. Formerly a small fishing village, it is now very much a tourist town, with many cafés, tavernas, hotels and apartments. The 9 klm sandy beach is the main attraction in the area, with Kalyvaki beach on the other side of the river as well. The nearby Lake Kournas is also a popular excursion by foot, bicycle or by the little tourist train. Georgioupoli is a well-located base for exploring the traditional villages of the area towards Vamos or into the White Mountains to the south.
