Gournes

The area of Gournes is located just 15 kml east of Heraklion. It is between the seaside towns of Gouves and Kokkini Hani and is mostly a touristic place. Many years ago, there was located the American Base, that its installations nowadays have been converted to conference and exhibition centres. Furthermore, one can find in the area the newly built aquarium the so called Creataquarium or Thalassokosmos. The CretAquarium was officially opened in December 2005. It provides its visitors with a special experience, a trip to the underwater world of the Mediterranean Sea and its creatures. Also in the area there is an extensive long beach which is used also as a place for camping.
