Chania Town

The city of Chania on the north west coastline is the second largest and one of the most picturesque and beautiful cities in Crete. Chania consists of the new town and the old town. The new town is typically modern where most locals live and work, it is less traditional than the old town but it still has many areas of charming beauty. The Public Market is an impressive building in the town center, where there are grocery stores, butchers shops, a fish market, vegetable shops and souvenir stands. The Public Gardens, next to the Market, are ideal for those in search of shade and tranquility. The old town has preserved its distinctive atmosphere and charm of the Venetian and Turkish periods. Entire Venetian, Turkish and Jewish quarters with well preserved buildings can be found in its narrow picturesque streets. The old city leads to the harbour where many Venetian and Turkish buildings still stand. At the entrance of the harbor, at its most northern point, is the renovated fort "Firkas", built in the 17th century that today houses the Maritime Museum of Chania. Also there is a summer theatre, where many drama performances are hosted. Whereas opposite, is the Mosque of the Janissaries which was built during the Turkish occupation of the island. The majestic Venetian lighthouse is ideally located at the extreme end of the pier and stands at the entrance of the city’s old harbour. The lighthouse is known as the landmark of the city and it is dated back to the 15th Century. There are many fine restaurants, tavernas and cafes lining the harbour which only contribute to its alluring charm. There is also a great variety of bars and night clubs where nightlife tends to be quite intense. The city of Chania has managed to maintain its Cretan tradition in perfect harmony with modern day economic growth and progress. Along with its surrounding natural landscape of exotic sandy beaches with crystal clear waters, high and traditional mountain and coastal villages make it the perfect holiday destination.
