CRETE
Crete is the most southern and largest island in Greece and by far the most beautiful and fascinating of all the Greek Islands. According to the latest census it has over 600,000 inhabitants. It has a temperate Mediterranean climate.
With its exquisite 1,046 kilometer-long coastline dotted with numerous coves, bays and peninsulas which afford a multitude of sandy beaches along the magnificent blue Mediterranean Sea. The island is divided into four districts: Chania, Rethymnon, Heraklion and Lassithi. Each district varies from the other and is special in its own way with superb beaches, beautiful villages and outstanding architectural heritage.
Crete is a location of significant ancient history and a popular tourist destination, its attractions vary and include the Minoan sites of Knossos and Phaistos, the classical site of Gortys, its Venetian fortresses & castles and the Samaria Gorge, as well as many other natural sites, monuments, and long sandy beaches, Byzantine monasteries, unspoiled mountain villages, stunning gorges and magnificent scenery, and of course its vibrant nightlife and excellent traditional cuisine and not to mention the Cretan hospitality The island of Crete is ideal for combining programs with the Greek mainland as well as with other Greek islands, with daily connections between the islands and mainland by domestic flights, normal and superfast ferry boats.
